- Boots to live TV. The set turns on to free-to-air, not to a blank input or a menu. This one change fixes more calls than everything else combined.
- Unused inputs hidden. If nothing is plugged into HDMI 3, it should not be selectable. Fewer wrong turns available means fewer wrong turns taken.
- Dialogue you can hear. A soundbar under the screen aimed at the chair, plus the speech or clarity mode and a sensible dynamic range setting so the ads are not twice the volume of the news.
- Screen at seated eye level. Measured from the actual chair, not a rule of thumb.
- A written card. We leave a large-print card on the side table with the three things that matter. Not a manual, a card.
Sound is the accessibility issue nobody names.
Age-related hearing loss takes the high frequencies first, and the high frequencies are exactly where the consonants live. That is why the complaint is so specific and so consistent: I can hear the music fine, I just cannot make out what they are saying. Then the television goes up to volume 40 and the rest of the house suffers. The reason this got worse rather than better is that flat-screen TVs have nowhere to put a decent speaker, so they fire backwards into the wall or downwards into the cabinet, which scatters exactly the frequencies that carry speech. This is where the trade-off is not close. An antenna gives numbered channels, one remote and no accounts. There is nothing to log into, no app that redesigns itself overnight and moves the buttons, and no failure mode where the internet drops and the television goes with it. Everything about it matches how someone who has watched channel 2 for sixty years expects a television to behave. Streaming is a fine addition if a family member manages it, but as the only path to the news it puts a login screen between your mother and the thing she actually wanted. And on this coast the antenna itself needs to be healthy, because a corroded head that drops ABC every time it rains is not something an older person will ring anyone about. They will just quietly stop watching.
