Which antenna grade survives Bunbury salt air?

Antenna specification is one of the few trade decisions where the cheap option and the right option look identical from the footpath on day one, and completely different four summers later. What the numbers on the box actually mean
Four figures get printed on antenna packaging, and only three of them are worth reading.
- Gain, in dBd or dBi. This is how hard the antenna concentrates signal arriving from one direction. The two scales differ by 2.15 dB, so a head advertised at 14 dBi is an 11.85 dBd antenna, and a supplier quoting dBi is quietly flattering the product. A normal domestic Yagi is 8 to 12 dBd. A high gain phased array is 12 to 16 dBd. Every extra decibel of gain also narrows the beam, which is why aim matters more on a big antenna than on a small one.
- Frequency band. Antennas are built for VHF band III, for the UHF bands, or for both. Most of the South West is fed from the Mount Lennard transmitter, and buying a UHF-only head off a shelf when your local multiplexes sit in VHF is the most common self-install failure we get called out to. A good installer meters what your roof is actually receiving before choosing a head, rather than reading the packaging.
- Front to back ratio. How well the antenna rejects signal arriving from behind it. In Bunbury this matters where a house sits between the transmitter path and a reflective surface such as a large shed roof or a rise behind the block, which on digital produces sudden blockiness rather than the soft double image that analogue used to give you.
- Element and fixing material. This one has nothing to do with reception and everything to do with whether the antenna is still up there in ten years. It is the number nobody prints in large type.
The local conditions that decide the specification
Atmospheric corrosivity, not just “near the beach”
Australian Standard AS 4312 sorts locations into atmospheric corrosivity categories running from very low through to very high, and AS/NZS 2312 sets out the protective coatings that suit each one. Bunbury spans several of those categories inside about eight kilometres. Streets within a few hundred metres of breaking surf at Dalyellup or Back Beach sit in the harshest band, where airborne chloride settles on exposed metal every single day. The estuary side of Australind and Leschenault is not far behind, because still salt water plus long dew periods is corrosively worse than the arithmetic suggests. By the time you are out at Gelorup or the eastern edge of Eaton, the load has dropped far enough that ordinary aluminium and galvanised steel behave the way the manufacturer expected them to.
Wind loading and the afternoon sea breeze
Structural mounting refers back to the wind load rules in AS/NZS 1170.2, which places the South West in Region A. That is the least severe of the Australian wind regions, so a mast here does not need cyclone hardware and nobody should be charging you for it. What Bunbury does have is a relentless afternoon sea breeze through summer, and a mast that survives a single winter gale can still work its U-bolts loose over a few hundred afternoons of buffeting. That is an argument for stainless bolts with nylon insert nuts and a bracket spread of at least 600 millimetres, not for a heavier antenna.
Roof type and what it will accept
Colorbond and zincalume roofs across the newer estates at Dalyellup and Eaton take a tripod or a fascia bracket easily, and the fixings go into purlins rather than through the sheet where possible. Older Bunbury and Withers homes with cement or terracotta tiles need a tile bracket bedded under a course of tiles rather than a screw driven through the tile itself, and any installer who screws a bracket straight through a tile has just built you a leak. If your tiles are old and brittle, expect two or three replacement tiles to appear in the quote, which is honest rather than a padding exercise.

What the sales words are worth
Antenna marketing leans on a small set of phrases that sound like specifications and are not. “4K ready” and “8K ready” are the worst of them: an antenna is a passive piece of shaped metal with no electronics and no awareness of what the transmitter is sending, so it cannot be more or less ready for a resolution. “Digital ready” means nothing either, since Australian analogue television finished more than a decade ago and every antenna on every shelf is receiving digital signal by default. “Commercial grade” and “heavy duty” are not defined terms anywhere in the Australian Standards, so a supplier can print them on anything at all.
The claims worth paying for are the ones a supplier has to put a number or a material against. Ask what alloy the elements are, whether the fixings are marine grade stainless, what the boom wall thickness is, whether the balun housing is genuinely sealed or merely covered, and how many years the written product warranty runs for in a coastal installation. If a product warranty excludes coastal environments, that exclusion is the honest specification and everything on the front of the box is not. When you should not spend this money
Three honest situations where the right answer is a smaller invoice than anything above.
- Your antenna is under eight years old and the fault is intermittent. Nine times out of ten that is a connector, a corroded splitter or a tired amplifier, not the antenna. A service and repair at $130 to $280 fixes it. Replacing a serviceable head is money burnt, and the symptoms are broken down on the bad signal page.
- You genuinely only watch streaming. If nobody in the house watches live free to air television, you do not need an antenna at all. - Your tiles or your roof sheeting are at the end of their life. Fit the antenna after the roof work, not before, or you will pay for the mast to come off and go back on.
