Keeping an antenna alive on the Bunbury coast.

An antenna is the one part of your house that lives outdoors, unpainted, in salt air, and gets no attention until it fails. Ten minutes of looking, at the right interval, is the difference between a $180 fix and a $700 replacement in July.

Why coastal antennas need attention and inland ones do not.

Bunbury is squeezed between the Indian Ocean, Koombana Bay and the Leschenault Estuary, which means most of the city is downwind of salt water for most of the year. The strong afternoon south-westerly sea breeze that makes summer bearable also drives salt aerosol inland day after day. AS 4312 sets out atmospheric corrosivity categories, and the surf-facing strips of this coast sit in the harshest bands in Australia, stepping down as you move inland. That single fact explains almost everything about antenna life here. A galvanised antenna is not a bad product, it is just a product designed for a category it is not sitting in. Move that same antenna to Picton or Davenport, a few kilometres back, and it will outlive its owner’s interest in it. Put it on a beachfront Dalyellup roof and it is a consumable.

What a real service covers.

  • Metering, not looking. Signal strength and quality at the antenna, at the amplifier and at the wall plate. The number we care about is the margin. A system with no margin looks perfect in February and fails in June.
  • Connectors. F-connectors are the first thing to go on this coast. We open them, inspect for green powder and water tracking, and reseal properly rather than wrapping electrical tape around them.
  • The earth. We confirm the mast is still bonded and earthed to AS 1417. Earths get cut by roofers, corroded through, or were never there in the first place.
  • Fixings and bracket. The bracket and the bolts fail before the antenna does. Corroded fixings are what turn a wind gust into a storm claim.
  • The down-lead. Cracked sheath, UV damage where the run sits exposed on a north-facing roof, and water wicking into the cable. Builder-grade RG59 is the usual culprit.
  • The aim. A few degrees of drift off the Mount Lennard bearing is enough to lose the weaker multiplexes while the strong ones stay perfect, which is why the fault looks so random from the couch.

The early warning signs you can see from the ground.

You do not need to get on the roof, and we would rather you did not. Take a pair of binoculars and look at the antenna twice a year. Green or white powder around the connectors or where the elements meet the boom is corrosion and it is the beginning of the end. An element that has drooped out of line, or an array that has visibly rotated from where it used to point, means the clamp is going. Rust weeping down the roof sheet below the bracket tells you the fixings are already gone even if the antenna looks fine. And the behavioural sign is the loudest one: if channels drop out in wet or windy weather and come back when it clears, water is tracking into a corroded joint. That is not the TV, and it will not fix itself.

A worked example of catching it early.

An Australind home on the estuary side booked a check because ABC was occasionally breaking up in wet weather, nothing more. From the ground everything looked fine. Metering showed strong signal at the antenna and a healthy amplifier, but the margin at the wall plate collapsed the moment we flexed the down-lead: the sheath had cracked where it crossed the gutter line and water was in the cable. We replaced the lead-in run with quad-shield RG6, resealed the connectors and re-earthed the mast, for $260. Left another winter, that same cable would have taken the amplifier with it and the job becomes $500 plus. The antenna itself was fine and did not need touching. That is what a check is for.

Honest lifespans by suburb.

We would rather tell you the truth than sell you a service plan. On a beachfront Dalyellup or ocean-side South Bunbury street, a standard galvanised antenna is realistically five to seven years and a marine-grade array with stainless fixings is twelve to fifteen. Around the estuary at Australind and Eaton, add a couple of years to both. In treed Gelorup, corrosion is slower but the antenna is working harder into a fringe signal, so the amplifier tends to be the thing that dies. At Picton, Davenport or Glen Iris, well back from the water, a decent antenna will simply keep going and an annual check is a waste of your money. Ask where you sit before you agree to anything.
