How to make a TV antenna last twice as long in Bunbury

What is actually attacking your antenna in the South West

Every region has one enemy that dominates. On the Bunbury coast it is salt, and everything else is a supporting act.

Water, arriving in winter

What neglect costs, with real numbers

  1. An unsealed connector. Sealing it correctly at installation costs nothing extra. Left open, water tracks down the coax and the repair becomes $280, and by the time it has corroded the head, $580. The same fault, three prices, decided by five minutes of work at the start.
  2. A loose mast through one winter. A $180 to $320 make-safe becomes broken tiles, a wet ceiling and insulation replacement at $2,000 to $3,000, and most of it will not be covered because an insurer will call a corroded mount wear and tear.   4. Letting the tree win. Two years of unchecked growth on a Gelorup block turns a working antenna into a fringe one, and the usual response is to buy a bigger antenna at $450 to $750. An afternoon with a pole saw would have been free.
  5. Running an amplifier past its life. An amplifier that is drifting rather than dead produces intermittent break-up that gets blamed on everything else, and people commonly spend $300 on diagnosis before replacing a $120 part. If it is over five years old on the coast, replace it and move on.

The honest bit: when you do not need us

  • If your picture only fails on hot still nights, that is atmospheric, not mechanical. Nothing we replace will change it.
